Great Business Ideas
January 22nd, 2009 by billyIt’s been about a year since we started this site with the notion that it would provide readers with as many great business ideas as possible. Though we haven’t updated it as often as we would have liked, our focus is still to eventually make this the biggest and most comprehensive resource for business idea brainstorming on the entire world wide web.
Though the absolute number of ideas on the site may not yet reach into the thousands, as I look back over the ones that we’ve brought you so far they strike me as, on the whole, quite smart, orginal, and most importantly – still ripe for the picking. So though my readers may have their own opinions, I’d like to lay out my favorite handful of concepts that we’ve published so far. So hear goes – the five truly great business ideas that KBI showed you in the last 12 months:
1. The “For-Hire” Salesperson/Estimator Business Idea- I really think that this could be a huge money-maker for the right kind of person. It fills a need that I see every day from my own perspective as a business owner, and I have to think that there are thousands of other small service operators in every major city who would find it useful, as well. It would basically allow me to “sub out” the sales aspect of my business to someone who is more outgoing and better able to persuade a homeowner than I am. Someone will run with this idea in your city and make a lot of money doing it – will it be you?
2. The Ad-Subsidized Barber Shop Business Idea – This is one of those ideas that might initially seem a little kooky but actually makes a lot of sense, and I’m surprised that nobody’s toying around this kind of thing yet (as far as I know). Usually advertising is a challenge because people have gotten so good at tuning it out or just turning their attention away from it, but this concept would almost guarantee a high level of consumer engagement, and would therefore make it a lucrative prospect both for the advertisers and the shop owners. This is one of those good business ideas that could also be used as a jumping off point to come up with other similar concepts based on situations where people are virtually forced to take in an advertisement.
3. The Senior Relocation Service Business Idea – This idea stemmed from my own personal experience of helping my grandparents to get settled in their new town, and I’m convinced that some savvy entrepreneur out there will eventually make a killing implementing it on a nationwide scale. Not to be rude, but the huge group of folks known as the “boomers” are starting to get old, and over the next few decades I think we’ll see all sorts of niche businesses spring up to address their unique needs and desires. Which leads me to my next favorite great business idea…
4. The “Old Movies Only” Theater Business Idea – I know I’d love the opportunity to see some of my favorite classic movies on the big screen, and that’s coming from a guy in his 30’s. I have to think that some of the older generations would absolutely eat this stuff up, as it would not only allow them to see some of their favorites in a theater setting but would also virtually eliminate loud kids and teens. Combine it with an attached “50’s” diner replica and you’ve created a place where a segment of the population will feel comfortable and welcome. Again, I don’t think you can go wrong catering a business to the needs and hopes of the elderly over the next 10-30 years.
5. The Craigslist Brokerage Business Idea – With Ebay constantly raising their fees I think we’re going to continue to see a quick rise in the overall usage of Craigslist by some who need cash and others who are looking for a bargain. This will continue to create opportunities for middlemen to step in and act as a go-between for buyers and sellers. Buyers would want to work with you because you represent trust, and sellers would want to work with you because you get them more money. The bigger your city, the bigger the potential profit.
So there you have it, fellow entrepreneurs. My five favorites from our first 12 months on the web. Which of these great business ideas will you make your own before someone else beats you to the punch?
